Shaheen Introduces POW/MIA Recovery Amendment to North Korea Legislation

Chris Jensen for NHPR

As Congress works on legislation to tighten sanctions against North Korea following its latest nuclear test explosion, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has introduced an amendment that preserves efforts to recover remains of American soldiers in the Korean War.

Shaheen introduced it Thursday after the Coalition of Families of Korean and Cold War POW/MIA's in Portsmouth said the sanctions bill could unintentionally hamper the North Korea POW/MIA Accounting Mission.

The amendment exempts activities conducted by federal or non-governmental organizations related to the identification or recovery of servicemember remains from the bill's enhanced sanctions.

The sanctions bill would require the investigation and punishment of those who knowingly import into North Korea any goods or technology regarding weapons of mass destruction; and those who engage in human rights abuses and cyber-terrorism.
