Regulators Plan Meeting To Discuss Safety At Seabrook Nuclear Plant

Jim Richmond

The safety performance of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant will be the topic of a meeting in Hampton on Wednesday.

The annual public meeting is hosted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission which will give a presentation on the overall safety performance of the plant in 2017 as well as take questions from the public.

The NRC says the overall safety performance of the plant is good, but one topic that is sure to come up at Wednesday's meeting is concrete degradation at the plant caused by a chemical reaction.

NRC spokesperson Neil Sheehan says regulators are currently evaluating the plan submitted by the plant’s operator, NextEra Energy, to address the issue.

“Because this is a one-of-a-kind issue for a U.S. plant but also a one-of-a-kind plan in this country to deal with this, we have been very carefully reviewing that.”

Representatives from NextEra Energy are expected to attend the meeting Wednesday night.
