University of New Hampshire President James Dean gave a speech Thursday on the future of the state's flagship public university.

Dean set the goal for UNH to become one of the nation's top 25 public universities in a pool of about 700.

"This is a big goal,” Dean said. “It will challenge us to reach higher and further than ever before and it will make UNH a national and international example of higher education, innovation and success."

Dean also laid out four strategic priorities for the university, including: Embracing New Hampshire, building financial strength, expanding academic excellence, and enhancing student success and well-being.

"They will learn here, secure in the knowledge that they are all, all regardless of any differences among them, valuable members of our community," Dean said.

In recent years, the university has seen a series of racially charged incidents, including graffiti with racial slurs and swastikas. A subsequent campus climate task force recommended the school increase attention on the hiring and retention of minority faculty, among other suggestions.
