Portsmouth Warns Residents About Ongoing Phone Scams

Police in Portsmouth are reminding residents about the dangers of a number of telephone scams.

Authorities say they continue to receive reports of phone calls in which individuals demand residents pay back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service or bail money for a relative.

They say the IRS contacts individuals about tax problems through the mail, not by phone, and that residents should call law enforcement with questions about a claim made by phone or to report a suspicious call.

Police in Durham and Littleton have reported similar scams this year. Some victims reportedly sent thousands of dollars to the perpetrators.
