25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, LITTLETON
Friday and Saturday April 17 & 18 at 7:30 PM and Sunday April 19 2:00 PM. Littleton Opera House, 2 Union Street. Presented by the Upstage Players, this Tony award-winning musical chronicles six young spellers that sing about the rules as spelling bees can also be unfair. To win a spelling bee depends a bit on luck of the words as well as skill, and the contestants have all kinds of bizarre and hilarious methods for how they remember to spell. EARTH DAY PLANTING AND ACTIVITIES WITH ACT, LITTLETON
Saturday April 18 3:30-5:00 PM The Loading Dock, Mill Street. Join the Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust in a family-friendly Earth Day celebration with activities for all ages. Tend seedling sunflowers, plant scarlet runner beans in recycled containers, decorate a container, take home baby sunflower and a bean plant for planting in your own garden. Walk along the Ammonoosuc River loop, help clean up the parking lot and areas near the river. Gloves and bags will be provided to all participants. Cost of attendance is $5 per person, which includes all supplies plus healthy snacks provided by ACT. Recommended for children K-6. BATH LIBRARY BOOK CLUB DISCUSSES “AGE OF INNOCENCE”
Thursday May 14 6:00 PM Bath Public Library. “Age of Innocence” by Edith Wharton is the story of three people whose entangled lives are deeply affected by the tyrannical and rigid requirements of high society. Newland Archer, a restrained young attorney, is engaged to the lovely May Welland but falls in love with May's beautiful and unconventional cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska. Despite his fear of a dull marriage to May, Archer goes through with the ceremony — persuaded by his own sense of honor, family, and societal pressures. He continues to see Ellen after the marriage, but his dreams of living a passionate life ultimately cease. Books may be picked up at the Bath Library; hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00am to noon and 1:00pm to 6:00pm and Saturdays 9:00am to noon.
