Merrimack County Sheriff Remains On The Job After Drunk Driving Arrest

Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard is continuing at his job despite being arrested on a charge of drunk driving this weekend.

Hilliard was off duty when Tilton police arrested him on Friday.

Hilliard previously served as Chief of Police in Northfield and is in his seventh term as County Sheriff. He was released on bail and will appear in court later this month.

When NHPR reached Hilliard at his office, he declined to comment, but shared a statement from his defense attorney Jared Bedrick. Bedrick said Sheriff Hilliard cooperated with local law enforcement officers and that "critical evidence remains unanalyzed.”

He said they will not provide further comment until they have reviewed the allegations.

Sarah Gibson joined NHPR's newsroom in 2018. She reports on education and demographics.
