Longtime ‘Only a Game’ Host Hands off the Ball

A new player will hit the field when long-time Only a Game host, Bill Littlefield, retires this month.

July 28 marks Littlefield’s last day on the air. NHPR listeners know Only a Game as one of our longest-running programs.

WBUR (Boston’s NPR station) is currently searching nationwide for the right voice to fill his spot. Upcoming guest hosts will include:

- NPR contributor and The Gist podcast Host Mike Pesca (Saturday, August 4)

- Only a Game Senior Producer Karen Given (Saturday, August 11)

Littlefield helmed the sports radio show—the only national NPR sports program—since 1993. NHPR began airing the program Saturday afternoons in the fall of 1996, then moved the show to its permanent home Saturdays at 7 p.m. in 1999, where it has remained ever since.

Over the years, Laura Knoy hosted the radio legend on The Exchange multiple times, chatting with him on topics spanning the breadth of the sports universe, from World Cup fever and Tour de France scandals, to the state of America’s favorite pastime.

NHPR will continue to broadcast the program; listeners can expect the same quality sports coverage with Only a Game’s signature in-depth look at the more human side of sports, using long-form narrative and insightful commentary.
