The Board of Trustees of New Hampshire Public Radio is pleased to announce the establishment of The Gardella Center for Journalism at New Hampshire Public Radio. On Wednesday, June 5, the news and content production area at NHPR’s Concord offices were named in honor of former CEO Betsy Gardella. Board members, former Board members, station supporters and staff were on hand to celebrate Betsy’s acceptance of this honor.
“As a Board we decided it was important to take this action honoring Betsy’s thirteen years’ of service as NHPR’s President and CEO. During that time, she led a transformation of our organization from a relatively small radio-focused organization, into a much more expansive organization with increased specializations in podcast, digital and long-form storytelling,” stated Board Chair, Peter Burger.
Under Betsy’s leadership, two multi-million dollar campaigns were successfully planned and executed. One campaign focused on securing the funds to acquire and build a modern, new facility complete with a technologically-rich newsroom and studio core. The second campaign – The Campaign for Innovation – asked the people of New Hampshire to make an investment in future-forward journalism and storytelling. With more than $5 million dollars raised, The Campaign for Innovation made it possible for NHPR to expand its news and content teams, invest further in digital tools and technologies, and expand its footprint in regional reporting. That investment paid off significantly for the people of New Hampshire: in both 2015, 2017 and 2018 the NHPR newsroom won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow national award for “Overall Excellence” – Small Market Station; our Outside/In podcast won a prestigious Overseas Press Club Award for its series Powerline. And NHPR continues to garner awards at both the regional and national levels.
The NHPR Board of Trustees looks forward to seeing how the legacy of Betsy Gardella’s original vision will take shape in the years to come – a vision that will benefit many in our state who care about thoughtful journalism and New Hampshire-focused storytelling.
