Farm to School Grant Awarded to Nashua Schools And North Country Co-op

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded grants to support bringing more local food into school cafeterias in New Hampshire.

The 2019 Farm to School grants will go to the North Country Farmers’ Cooperative and the Nashua School District.

New Hampshire received two out of 126 grants across 42 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Over $9 million in federal funding was awarded.

Julie Moran is the CEO of the North Country Farmers’ Cooperative, which will receive around $26,000, according to the USDA. She says the award comes after many frustrating attempts to supply local crops to kids. She hopes this grant will make the process simpler for farmers.

“By the end of this grant, we’re hoping to have an action plan that will say this is what you have to do as a farmer to sell to your local schools and here are the steps,” said Moran.

Her co-op has provided produce to schools in Colebrook, Pittsburg, Stewartstown and beyond.

Nashua Schools will receive $100,000, which will be used for its agriculture education program and more locally farmed produce.
