DOE Spokesman Remains After 'Disciplinary Action' Over Comment Some Called Racist

Officials at the New Hampshire Department of Education say an employee who was under investigation remains at his job and that "appropriate and available disciplinary actions have been taken."

Over the summer, Anthony Schinella, the Department's Director of Communications, made comments on Facebook criticizing a gathering of state business leaders focused on diversity.

He wrote: "We don't want or need NH to become any kind of cesspool..."

Governor Chris Sununu and Frank Edelblut, the Commissioner of the N.H. Department of Education, harshly rebuked Schinella, and the Department began an investigation into Schinella's comments.

On September 27, it posted three sentences about the investigation's conclusion on its website.

In an interview with NHPR on November 7, Commissioner Edelblut and the employee in question, Schinella, declined to elaborate further on the investigation.

Sarah Gibson joined NHPR's newsroom in 2018. She reports on education and demographics.
