Cog Railway Helps Rescue Hiker On Mount Washington

Annie Ropeik / NHPR

Rescuers say they used the Cog Railway to rescue a hiker who injured his back on Mt. Washington.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department says 46-year-old Michael Couch of Atlanta, Indiana, was hurt and not able to continue while hiking the mountain on Saturday. Couch is an amputee who was hiking to the summit to raise money for his Lost Limbs Foundation.

Fish and Game requested help from Mount Washington Cog Railway, which provides mountain tours. The railway was holding its 150th anniversary celebration at the time.

Fish and Game says the railway found an engineer and brakeman, and sent up a rescue crew in less than an hour. Couch was brought down on the train.
