New Hampshire got off to a late start compared to many other states that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, but it quickly made up for lost time in terms of enrollment.
Thirty states and the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid eligibility to include all non-disabled adults with incomes at or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level, about $16,000 for an individual. Enrollment has significantly outpaced projections in a dozen states, including New Hampshire, where enrollment started July 1, 2014. An Associated Press analysis shows at least seven states increased cost estimates for 2017.
More than 41,000 people enrolled during the first year, about 7,000 more than expected.
The expansion's fate is uncertain. Lawmakers opted not to reauthorize it this year and will debate it next year.
