Shelves are a little barer than usual in Market Basket stores around New Hampshire. An employee strike in support of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas held up at least some food distribution.
Employees at the Market Basket in downtown Concord say no trucks came in on Friday, and the produce cooler was already virtually empty by mid-day.
“I shop here all the time so I did notice that the produce section was definitely lower,” says Heather D’Angelis, “and they did make a comment that they weren’t certain what trucks were running.”
Some shoppers, like Diane McGonigal, came to Market Basket after hearing about the strike.
“I must say I read the article in the paper this morning and I thought well I’ll come down and stock up,” McGonigal explained while shifting groceries into the back of her car.
An estimated 2,000 employees and supporters rallied at the company’s headquarters in Tewksbury Friday, demanding that deposed CEO Arthur T. Demoulas be reinstated.
Thursday Market Basket’s new management issued a letter stating that employees who didn’t perform their duties due to the strike could lose their jobs.
According to reports as many as 2,000 employees and customers attended the rally in Tewksbury.
Yesterday Market Basket’s new management issued a letter stating that employees who didn’t perform their duties could lose their jobs, but employees have vowed to continue rallying until their demands are met.
