Cold Front To Hit N.H., "Flash Freeze" Tonight

Rebecca Lavoie for NHPR

A blast of cold Arctic air is moving into the Granite State today.  It’s part of the same system that’s put the Midwest into a deep freeze.

The cold front is moving into New England from New York State this afternoon.  That’s according to meteorologist Rob St. Pierre of Nashua-based Hometown Forecast Services.

“So what will happen is, our temperatures may hold steady at the upper 30s, lower 40s Monday morning," St. Pierre says.  "And then our temperatures are going to fall in the afternoon, and then we’re likely going to be falling probably to the single digits and possibly below zero Monday night.”

He says that sudden drop will create a so-called “flash freeze,” creating icy conditions on any wet, untreated surfaces this evening.  There’s also a chance of light wet snow, but no accumulation expected.  He says the cold temperatures will bottom-out on Tuesday and Tuesday night.  On Wednesday, things will start warming up.  And by Thursday, we’ll be back to more seasonable temperatures.
