Hooksett Rest Stop Upgrades Kick Off

Governor Maggie Hassan and others broke ground Thursday morning at the Hooksett rest area on Interstate 93, kicking off construction for a major upgrade of the liquor outlets. The Turnpike System expects to make up to $40 million over the course of the 35 year contract. And the state’s cut of liquor revenue is also expected to increase.

The Chairman of New Hampshire’s Liquor Commission, Joseph Mollica, says the rest areas in Hooksett enjoyed a record year of sales but could do even better.

“Right now, these two stores; this one behind us and the one across the highway, bring in $34.5 million in revenue. And we’re expecting with the expansion and the improvements to increase that by $6 million.”

Mollica says the liquor and wine outlet part of the Hooksett rest areas will double in size to about 20,000 square feet, and add more than 130 full-time equivalent jobs.

In addition, a food court will showcase the New Hampshire brand and include a ‘50s style diner. The new facilities will also feature a bank, an Irving gas station and more parking spots.

Construction is expected to be completed by April of 2015. Both stores will remain open throughout.
