Democrats Continue Push For Quick Action On Medicaid Expansion

The past few weeks served as a cooling off period after last November’s special legislative session failed to produce a deal on Medicaid expansion between the Democratically-held House and GOP-controlled Senate.

The debate will roar back to life on Wednesday, though, when Democrats in the House say they’ll tack an expansion plan onto an unrelated bill.

The proposal envisions adding about 50,000 low income residents into the Medicaid health program, but sends those earning between roughly $11, 500 and $15, 000 into the new exchange where they'll select coverage starting in 2017.

House Republicans are complaining this new plan isn’t getting a public hearing.

During the special session, Republican leaders in the Senate were adamant all newly eligible recipients be sent into the exchange within a year, something thing Democrats including Governor Hassan say is unworkable.

Hassan has pushed for expansion, and the $2.4 billion in federal money it would bring to the state.
