Executive Council Weighs Sunapee Expansion Plan

The Executive Council is holding a work session on a proposal to expand the Mount Sunapee ski resort, which is supported by economic development officials and businesses, but opposed by environmental groups.

The five-member Council and Gov. Maggie Hassan are scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Jeffrey Rose, the state's economic development commissioner, will discuss the plan. He called it a balanced and responsible project that brings together recreation, conservation and economic promotion. But opponents say the area still faces a threat from private development, and that the public hasn't had enough time to study it.

Mount Sunapee Resort has been trying to expand for nearly two decades.

It's not clear when the Council would vote on the plan. Its next meeting would be April 6.
