PRNDI Continuing Coverage: Abuse and Neglect at Lakeview
NHPR’s Health and Science Reporter Jack Rodolico spent much of 2015 investigating Lakeview NeuroRehabilitation Center, a remote facility for people with brain injuries and intellectual disabilities. By the time the year closed, this obscure institution was something of a household name across the state.
The reports uncovered far-reaching allegations of patient abuse and fraudulent billing practices at Lakeview. Along the way, Jack encountered a crusading mother who made secret recordings of state regulators in a desperate attempt to get someone to help her daughter, and his stories provided accountability as those same state regulators – after 30 years of inaction – cracked down and ultimately shuttered Lakeview.
Jack continued reporting on Lakeview’s place in the state’s long history of shuttered institutions, and on what happened to those clients left with few options when Lakeview closed.
