World Cup glory has returned to the U.K. — well, sort of

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

Good morning. I'm A Martínez. World Cup glory has returned to the U.K. - well, sort of. Britain just beat out 21 teams from around the world in picking up trash in the inaugural SpoGomi World Cup in Tokyo. The contest is aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues. Now, the game is simple. Points are awarded according to the amount and type of trash picked up in a designated area within a time limit. It's actually kind of inspiring. Hey, wait. Wait a second. Is that a plastic cup on the ground? Those points are mine. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
