After backlash against a local ordinance allowing transgender people to use restrooms aligned with their gender identity, rather than the gender assigned to them at birth, the North Carolina legislature has approved a broad bill that prevents cities and counties from passing their own anti-discrimination rules.

The action took place in the first special session held by the legislature in 35 years. The governor signed the measure into law last night. Jeff Tiberii from Here & Now contributor WUNC reports.
