The MSC Oscar, the largest container ship in the world, set sail for the first time last month.
The ship spans nearly the length of four football fields, which is becoming a trend in cargo ship architecture. Since the recession, shipping companies have been trying to fit more cargo on larger and larger vessels, but bigger isn’t always better, as massive ships also involve more risk.
Andrew Kinsey is a retired cargo ship captain and the senior marine risk consultant at the insurer Allianz SE. He speaks with Here & Now’s Robin Young about the inherent risks of bigger ships.
