Results for layoffs

To be honest the economic crisis has not been bad for us. As we were looking for our new place to live the market came crashing down. As did the U.S. dollar. Perfect! We bought our house with a huge smile on our face, packed our stuff and flew over. As my dad told me full of excitement,'' Timing is everything son''. Soon after we could buy our cars for practically nothing. Especially if you compare The Netherlands to the USA. In The Netherlands everything is taxed 20 percent. Cars are way more expensive anyway, another score for our family.  [more]
Being in my mid-forties my friends and I have always had job opportunities, there have been ups and downs but we never thought much about lay offs, especially long term ones. Though my family has not experienced problems several of our friends have been dealing with them. We have friends whose households have been without a job for over a year. We have friends with multiple advanced degrees who are being laid off. These are people whom we never ever thought would run into issues. It makes you feel very close to the financial crisis.  [more]
The current economy is effecting everyone in the world, including my family. I used to have a good job at an electrics company,I made good money at work by high salary plus overtime, that made me more confident about bringing up my children by myself,I'm a single parent. But the company sent a lot of work overseas(such as Mexico). That caused a lot of people to lose their job, included myself. Now I have to go collect unemployment, apply for electric assistance, and health care for my children .I really want to live and support my children on my own,but what should I do?  [more]
The economy has done terrible things. My Dad works at Goss and he designs printers. With the decline in the economy fewer people are buying printers. It has gotten so bad that hundreds of employees have been layed off and more are still to go through furloughs and layoffs. Though the economy certainly has a part in Goss's downfall it is also due to the fact that newspapers are declining and many things- like news- are becoming virtual.   [more]
I am a twenty-three year old former service member returning to my family in New Hampshire after serving in the United States Army for several years. Upon my arrival, I have seen the impact of the recession on the lives of my friends and family. It was only in the last few months that my parents had to file for bankruptcy and have had to scrounge for more work to fill an already full schedule.   [more]
I've noticed that this economy is making people reinvent themselves.A friend I know recently got laid off because of the economy. Then with his free time he started making works of art out of wood as a hobby. Quickly realizing that he could make money selling them he started looking into the prospect of marketing them. So he started talking about it to his friends and neighbors to see if they had any advice. He soon mentioned it to his neighbor who happened to be a web designer, who told him that web marketing would be his best bet.  [more]
In the recession I've witnessed quite a few changes. one thing that strikes out more than others is the increase of homelessness due to job losses. Just driving down the road and sometimes even the highway average people holding cardboard signs are standing, worried and vulnerable. Most of the time signs will say "will work for food" or "hard worker searching for job to pay bills" or " will work for ride". Another thing that I've noticed are pay cuts and downsizing in different organizations. In my uncle's company recently 750 people lost their jobs.  [more]
I was employed by a small company which makes instant messaging software. With no significant sales to speak of, they had a 41% layoff in the beginning of October. Being a small company, they weren't clear on some of the things we needed to do once we were layed off. Our insurance company told us the company would provide us information which wasn't provided by the company.   [more]
I attended a Dale Carnegie seminar on October 7th that focused on global re-engagement. Deb Titus, Managing Director of Dale Carnegie-NH, gave attendees some food for thought regarding the impact of all of the bad news and layoffs to those who remain behind in the workforce. Workers not only hear the steady stream of gloom and doom news, but must also pick up new responsibilities and workloads to cover those that were let go. Many live in fear of layoff, or must take pay cuts or mandatory furloughs. Their stress is palpable.   [more]
We just came back from a vacation we booked a long time ago. At first we thought we should cancel it, but then thought we weren't sure when we'd get another chance to go (who knows about the future). We found out that people were incredibly grateful that we travelled. People were offering incredible deals, and we felt very good helping out the tourism industry, and of course vacation felt good too. Of course, the very day I got back to work, I walked into my coworkers being laid off.   [more]
