There seems to be a trend moving through NH to shift power away from the voters to the boards of selectmen. Several towns, Whitefield included, are attempting to make town treasures appointed, rather than elected positions. There is also an attempt to strip power from the cemetery trustees and place it again in the hands of the selectmen.
A limited knowlege of government, human nature, the philosophy of founding fathers would find these changes unwise and/or offensive. Town meetings were designed (as a reaction to an absolute monarchy)to distribute power as widely as possible to ensure the least corruption and the most participation. Be mindful of "effeciency" as away to to remove public participation, government accountability, etc.
I urge voters to reject these two proposal. "An ounce of history is worth a pound of logic." - Holmes.
