A bill critics say would reduce funding for legal services for the poor was sponsored by Gregory Sorg, a Republican from Easton, and heavily favored by North Country representatives.

The bill - HB 1395 - passed the House 235 – 99.  It now goes to the Senate.

Eight North Country representatives – all Republicans – voted in favor.

Four North Country representatives – all Democrats – voted against it.

Four legislators were excused from voting.

Nine North Country representatives voted in favor of a bill that requires women to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion and three voted against.

As NHPR’s Josh Rogers reported:

The so-called women’s right to know bill had to be pared back to win final house passage.

Penalties for doctors were stripped, as was the  requirements that abortion providers give women seeking an abortion specific information about abortion risks, including a contested claim linking aborts to breast cancer. 

Seven North Country legislators were among those voting to pass HB 1666, a bill that gives lawmakers the final say on collective bargaining agreements with the State.

Five were opposed and four were excused from voting.  

As reported by NHPR:

The legislation is just the latest effort by Republicans in Concord to rein in the costs of public employee contracts.

"This gives the legislature the ability to look at an entire contract and say whether it is fair, and whether we should fund it," says Republican Neil Kurk of Weare.

Half of the North Country’s sixteen representatives voted in favor of House Bill 228  which bars any organization that performs elective abortions from receiving any state or federal funds.

As NHPR reported: “The measure backed by GOP leaders means Planned Parenthood of Northern New England would no longer be eligible to enter into contracts with the state to provide non-abortion reproductive health services to the poor – a role the organization has played in NH for 40 years. Warren Groen of Rochester is the measure’s lead sponsor.

“The final margin, 207-147, falls shy of what would be needed to override a veto by Governor Lynch. The measure now heads to the Senate.”
