Smuttynose Breaking Ground on Hampton Facility

Smuttynose Brewery breaks ground tonight on its new facility in Hampton about 10 miles down the coast from its current location in Portsmouth.


Smuttynose says it’s moving to Hampton to support its growth.


The brewery has been creating craft beers in New Hampshire since 1994. After the company produced 15,000 barrels in 2006, its status changed from a ‘micro-brewery’ to a ‘regional independent brewery.’


But Smuttynose president, Peter Egelston, says there’s more to the move than acquiring more space.

Granite State Athlete to Compete in Paralympics

New Hampshire athlete Victoria Arlen headed to Europe Wednesday in preparation for the Paralympics on August 29.

Victoria Arlen’s chances at a medal are pretty good. The Exeter High school senior broke two world records for competitive swimming at the Paralympics trial this past June. Arlen was an avid swimmer before an undiagnosed spinal inflammation put her in a vegetative state at age 11, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Only three years after waking from her coma she broke records in the 100 and 400-meter freestyle, securing her place on the U.S. team.

New Hep C Case Has Investigators Casting Wider Net

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday the confirmation of another patient infected with Hepatitis C while receiving treatment at Exeter Hospital.

This new case, confirmed by the Department of Public Health Services, brings the total number of infected up to 33. That includes David Kwiatkowski, the former hospital employee charged with stealing drugs and refilling the used syringes with saline solution. They were later reused on patients.

N.H. May See Homicide Increase After Passage Of Stand Your Ground

New research out of the University of Georgia finds a significant increase in homicides in states that have what are known as Stand Your Ground laws. In June of 2011, the New Hampshire legislature became the 24th state in the nation to pass a Stand Your Ground Law – that’s a law that allows someone to fire a gun in self-defense, even when he or she can safely retreat.

N.H. Unemployment Slightly Up in July

The New Hampshire Department of Employment Security says unemployment is slightly up for the month of July.

More than 4,400 jobs were lost between June and July, bringing the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 5.4 percent. That’s an increase of .3  percentage points. The total number of employed residents was just shy of 700,000.

The New Hampshire unemployment rate is still well below the national rate of 8.3 percent, which also went up a tenth of a percent from June.
