Meeting Planned Over Owners Complaint That Balsams Renovation Is Stalled

The Colebrook Planning Board has called a special meeting May 22 to try and resolve an issue the new owners of the Balsams Grand Resort say is delaying its renovation.

The owners,  Dan Dagesse and Dan Hebert, are asking the Planning Board to approve a subdivision that would separate a 28-acre parcel from the roughly 1,000 acres that currently includes the hotel, grounds and golf course.

The parcel is not near the hotel and includes what is sometimes described as a “liquid waste dump” because it is thought to contain waste from the latex factory that once operated elsewhere on the property.

Veterans in Coos County deserve a medical clinic in Colebrook, according to a letter sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs by Senators Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Charlie Bass.

“While Coos County’s population is small compared to the area covered, there are some 3,605 veterans in New Hampshire’s North Country, of which 1,821 are in the VA medical system,” the letter says.

“Given the substantial obstacles veterans in the North Country confront in getting the VA care they have earned, we ask the VA to consider whether the unique circumstances in Coos County warrant the establishment of a Community-Based Outpatient Clinic.”

The owner of a Colebrook plant that exploded in 2010 faces criminal charges. NHPR’s Chris Jensen reports.

Coos County Attorney Robert Mekeel says a grand jury has indicted  Craig Sanborn the owner of the Black Mag plant in Colebrook.

He faces manslaughter and negligent homicide charges for an explosion that killed Jesse Kennett and Donald Kendall.

A third man was badly injured.

The indictments came down late Friday.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials have said they were not aware of the plant before the explosion.

But afterwards OSHA concluded there were huge safety problems and it blamed Sanborn, who denied being at fault.

Sanborn couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
