The Continuing Battle Over the Landfill

The town of Bethlehem and the owner of the Bethlehem landfill are headed back to court.

The town is attempting to stop Casella Waste Systems from expanding the landfill beyond 51 acres.

The two sides have been battling over the landfill for nearly ten years.

It's a dispute that has cost millions and sharply divided the community of 2200 residents.

NHPR correspondent Todd Wellington has the story.

UNH May Use Renewable Energy Source To Power Campus

UNH may soon begin using a renewable energy source to power its campus.

Plans are in the works to build a pipeline to pump methane gas from a landfill in Rochester to Durham.

University officials say the project would not only cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, but save UNH millions of dollars in the long run.

Toxic Plume Nears Pristine Pond

Officials in the North Country town of Columbia are keeping a nervous eye on pollution leaking from an old landfill in nearby Colebrook. The toxic chemicals are taking an underground course toward a pristine fishing pond. Officials in Colebrook say they want to cap off the landfill to stop the leakage, but they can't afford to. Colebrook isn't alone in facing this issue. There are 49 other unlined, uncapped landfills around the state. NHPR's Trish Anderton reports.

Concerns about capacity at the Bethlehem landfill

A controversial landfill in the North Country town of Bethlehem is under fire again. The commercial North Country Environmental Services Landfill takes trash from about a hundred New Hampshire communities?..and from several other states. A local citizens? group, together with the Conservation Law Foundation, says that?s more trash than the state allows. NHPR correspondent Rebecca Brown reports.

Sheep Aren't Just for Wool Anymore

A new sound is coming from the Keene Landfill these days.

Amid the roar of trucks and the crushing of recyclables, one can hear the sound of sheep.

The animals are grazing along the grassy hills of the closed and capped landfill.

Keene's is the first landfill in the state to use sheep to cut the grass....and it may be the first in the nation.

New Report on Waste Recommends Recycling and More

A new report by the Governor's Solid Waste Tax Force recommends that the state increase its recycling efforts. The report also suggests that communities band together and create regional waste collection facilities. Despite these findings, some critics say the recommendations did not go far enough.

Bethlehem loses Supreme Court Appeal on Landfill

The town of Bethlehem has received what it considers disappointing news.

The State Supreme Court ruled against the town in its ongoing battle with North Country Environmental Services, the owners of a local landfill. The town had been trying for years to restrict the landfill's growth.

But the court ruled on most counts against the town...essentially upholding the earlier trial courts ruling.

Landfill Fight Raises Basic Issue of Local Control

The town of Bethlehem and Casella Waste Systems have a case before the NH Supreme Court. Casella, a private landfill company which owns 87 acres of land in Bethlehem, argues that only state government can rule on how much property can be used for landfill. The town argues that zoning regulations changed in 1987 and the landfill cannot grow beyond 20 acres. The case is expected to take several months.

Controversy Over Waste to Energy In Bethlehem
