Our 25 in 25 series continues with "Mr. Balsams" Steve Barba. For fifty years, Barba was a part of one of New Hampshire's oldest and most prestigious resorts, becoming almost a steward of vacationers in the Granite State. Upon his retirement in 2005, he became the Executive Director of University Relations for Plymouth State University. We'll talk with Steve Barba about his career and how he has seen tourism develop in the state in the last quarter century.

From Caddy to CEO

Steve Barba recently retired after almost five decades at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel. He began as a 13-year-old caddy and eventually became CEO in his 20s, at a time when the Balsams and other grand resorts were in serious decline. Under his leadership, the Balsams thrived. He'll tell John Walters how.

Dining at The Balsams

For decades, every letter mailed from Dixville Notch, home of ?The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel,? bore a postmark that read, ?Where Gracious Living Reins Supreme.?
The postmark has changed, but gracious living continues at The Balsams, which opened in 1866. Dinner remains the high point of the day. But teaching the tradition of fine dining to a new generation requires some special efforts.
