The Fairpoint/Verizon Deal

Fairpoint, a North Carolina based telecom company, will soon take over Verizon’s land-based telephone and internet network in northern New England. Vermont and Maine agreed to the deal earlier in the year but New Hampshire’s Public Utility Commission didn’t agree until Monday. Opponents worry the acquisition is too financially risky for the state, but those who supported the deal think it will do a lot for New Hampshire, especially in the struggling North Country. We’ll break down the deal and how it may affect the state.

Fairpoint Gets Final Approval from New Hampshire Regulators

New Hampshire regulators have approved Fairpoint Communication’s 2.4 billion dollar purchase of Verizon’s Northern New England phone system.

With the approval, Fairpoint has cleared the last regulatory hurdle it has faced in seeking the telecommunication takeover in Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.

PUC Staff Signs on to Revised Verizon-Fairpoint Deal

Fairpoint Communications has stepped closer to taking over Verizon’s traditional phone service in Northern New England.

The staff of New Hampshire’s Public Utilities Commission has given the green light to a deal that would lower the price Fairpoint would pay for the land line network.

New Hampshire regulators say the deal between Fairpoint and Verizon needs to be restructured before it can gain their approval.

That deal would let Fairpoint buy Verizon’s northern New England telephone network for 2.7 billion dollars.

But developments in Maine have already made changes to the deal that regulators have been reviewing.

The Hearings Are Over, But Questions Remain About FairPoint's Finances

New Hampshire’s utility regulators have finished hearing testimony about Fairpoint’s proposed 2.7 billion dollar purchase of Verizon’s Northern New England telephone network.

During the hearings, critics and regulators raised concerns about Fairpoint’s finances, and the company’s ability to extend broadband to thousands more customers.

But company officials argued they can deliver what they promise and make their business grow.

Groups Urge New Hampshire Regulators to Reject Fairpoint Deal

Two Companies Say Verizon Has Stiffed Them on Telephone Pole Maintenance Costs

Two electric utilities today asked that before Verizon can sell its operations here in New Hampshire, it be compelled to pay its share of telephone pole maintenance costs.

The request came during a hearing before the Public Utilities Commission on Fairpoint’s 2.7 billion dollar bid to buy Verizon’s land lines in New England.

Flood Damage To Phones Hurting Some Local Businesses

We've heard alot about the damage to homes, businesses, and roads from this weeks storms.

But even people who were not swamped by flood waters are feeling the effects.

When the Lamprey River flooded the Verizon switching station in Raymond, some 6 thousand phone lines were knocked out completely.

And that's meant that businesses that rely on the phone for customers are taking a big hit.

Jeff Kantor owns CarWorld.

They sell recycled car parts.....mostly over the phone.

And he tells NHPR's Mark Bevis, if it goes on much longer, he may have to lay people off.

Unions Express Anxieties Over the Verizon/Fairpoint Deal

Verizon’s proposed sale of its land line business in Northern New England isn’t going over very well with two unions that represent some of the workers.

In fact, the unions have adopted a slogan called, “Stop the Sale” to convince regulators to scuttle the deal.

But Fairpoint Communications, the company looking to buy the business for 2.7 billion dollars, wants to assure the unions they have nothing to worry about.
