By Brady Carlson on Sunday, December 28, 2008.

In putting together our last set of weekly links of 2008, Here's What's Awesome noticed a lot of the links reflected a certain trait that makes so much of what you hear and read from Word of Mouth... ingenuity. That spark of genius that builds something out of nothing, that sees what isn't there and makes it so. We also had a link about zambonis that we didn't dare discard, so a little something for everybody - plenty of ingenuity and a dash of zamboni.

Keeping Toys Simple

By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, December 11, 2008.

Here's some good news for cash-strapped parents this holiday season – you really don’t need to break the bank on toys for your kids. In fact, the less you spend, the better off they may be.

I know, you want to be a good parent. You want to offer them all they need to get by in school and life, so you’re doing all you can to start them off right - Baby Einstein tapes, little toy computers with bells and whistles to learn shapes and colors. But our guest says the multi-billion dollar toy industry has us hoodwinked into thinking those gadgets will help a child’s development.

Roberta Golinkoff is head of the Infant Language Project at the University of Delaware. She’s co-author of A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool and Einstein Never Used Flash Cards, and says that if you really want to increase your childrens’ potential, less is more.

By Mark Bevis on Tuesday, December 11, 2007.

The problem of toxic toys has been in the news a lot lately.

The people at ALPHA, the American Lead Poisoning Help Association have come up with a plan to help.

On Saturday they are sponsoring free lead poisoning prevention and toy testing clinic in Manchester.

The organization's co-founder, Sandra Roseberry, tells NHPR's Mark Bevis that the clinic will have all sorts of information on lead poisoning and where to go for help.

But it will also have what they hope will be a big draw this holiday season:
