Tough Economic Choices for New Hampshire Towns

Snow Causing Problems for Many Towns

Another foot of snow fell this week in parts of New Hampshire.
This winter, the snowfall is record-setting for many towns and cities, with some areas seeing more than 10 feet.
While it’s great for the ski industry, municipalities are struggling to remove the snow and finding a place to put it.

North Country Worries About Budget Cuts

Hospitals and healthcare providers in the North Country are worried about Governor Lynch's upcoming budget meeting on Friday.

They're afraid it will lead to decisions that would hurt some of the state's most vulnerable citizens.

NH's Towns and Cities Face Budget Squeeze

In Nashua, homeowners could see their taxes go up by as much as 17 percent.

Underfunded Courts Complain

Can Budget be Cut Without Changing Law

The New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies released a report today/Friday that candidates for state office should look at……
According to the report, most of the increase in the state’s budget over the past decade took place in six key areas of spending.
And those areas are controlled not by those writing up the budget…but by state and federal law.

NH County Nursing Homes Feeling a Pinch

Mew Hampshire's County Nursing Homes are feeling a pinch. The State's contribution to the cost of running the homes is declining as the cost of operating them has gone up. Vermont May Cut Budget

State budgets are beginning to feel the effects of the economic slowdown. Early last week New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen told state officials to prepare for possible budget cuts. And in Vermont, lawmakers and the governor are facing the prospect of cutting millions of dollars from a budget that just last year was projecting multi-million dollar surpluses. Berlin Tightens its Belt

City leaders in Berlin are reacting to yesterday?s announcement that American Tissue, the company that owns a key paper mill complex in the area, has declared bankruptcy. The Berlin City Council met last night to discuss the eight-percent, across the board cuts it had already planned to the city budget. NHPR reporter Josh Rogers was there. He spoke earlier this morning with NHPR?s Trish Anderton.

Judiciary Bemoans Court Security Budget Cuts

When the legislature passed the biennial budget two weeks ago, it cut 1.8 million dollars earmarked for security at New Hampshire’s thirty-nine district courts. While lawmakers defend the cut as prudent fiscal policy, court officials say it could prove disastrous….not only for the 33 full-time workers who could lose their jobs……but also for the citizens they serve. NHPR’s Josh Rogers has more.
