Fernald and Benson Secure Nominations

Democrat Mark Fernald and Republican Craig Benson will be their parties' nominees in the race for governor. Both men won over more experienced politicians: Fernald over veteran state lawmaker Bev Hollingworth; Benson, over former US Senator Gordon Humphrey and former State senator Bruce Keough.

That?s about seven million dollars more than Republicans and Democrats spent combined in the gubernatorial race two years ago. The candidates spoke last week at a Laconia Chamber of Commerce forum.

Gradually, over the last two decades, television advertising has emerged as the single most important component of any statewide campaign for governor. Craig Benson and Enterasys

New television ads from Republican Gordon Humphrey?s gubernatorial campaign scoff at rival Craig Benson?s record in the business world. Benson co-founded Cabletron, one of New Hampshire?s biggest employers in the 1990?s. But the company hit hard times late in the decade. It spun off into four successor companies. One of them, Enterasys Networks is currently under federal investigation. And it faces a half a dozen lawsuits, alleging financial wrongdoing. That?s not the record Benson wants to focus on in his run for governor. NHPR?s David Darman has more.
