Hollis is Thinking About Buying Silver Lake State Park

The town of Hollis is considering a first for New Hampshire.

In the middle of town sits Silver Lake State Park, complete with a 34 acre pond and beaches. It’s popular too. About 35 thousand people visit a year.

And Hollis is thinking about either buying it or leasing it from the state.

The State Wants to Log Piscah State Park

State officials plan Saturday to propose an 82-acre timber harvest in Pisgah State Park, in southwest New Hampshire.

Officials say they’ve waited decades for the resources to carry out the project, but critics want the state to wait longer.

Legislation Aims To Improve State Historic Sites

New Hampshire lawmakers will consider two bills this session designed to improve state parks and historic sites.

One bill would infuse 10 million dollars into the system over the coming biennium.

Another creates a strategic plan to try to make the parks more profitable and creates a bureau for historic sites.

But as New Hampshire Public Radio’s Amy Quinton reports, some preservationists say the legislation still leaves historic sites in jeopardy of shutting down.

Council Approves ATV Park

The Executive Council has approved a plan to purchase land in Berlin to become a new state park with an estimated 350 miles of ATV trails.

Funding our State Parks

Debate is brewing around New Hampshire about the state's self-funded park system and whether or not that should change. The largest example being raised- a proposed expansion at the Mount Sunapee ski area. Laura's guests are Bob Odell, Republican Senator from Lempster who is the Senate Majority Whip and Chairman of the Energy and Economic Development Committee. He has sponsored a bill to study the state park funding system and its merits. Also in studio will be Charles Royce, former House Representative who chaired the Resource, Recreation, and Development Committee and also chaired the joint legislative committee that leased Mt. Sunapee. Royce was also a former manager of Monadnock State Park.

ATV Use

The NH Bureau of Trails is looking into putting ATV trails at Bear Brook State Park. Close attention is being paid to this effort by both sides of the issue. A New Management Plan for Monadnock

The state is getting ready to set up a management plan to protect the popular mount Monadnock from overuse.

A steering committee is ready to present its plans, and ask for public comment.

Geoffrey Jones, with the Society to Protect New Hampshire's Forests tells NHPR's Mark Bevis the plan is way overdue.

Jones says Monadnock is already the most hiked mountain in the country.

Move to Modify Mount Sunapee Lease Draws Fire
