Is Lynch Seeking New Leaders At Transportation And HHS?

As policymakers gear up for budget season, Governor Lynch seems to be paying particularly close attention to two of the largest state departments -- transportation and heath and human services. The Governor says he wants to improve agency performance as the budget process begins. But Lynch may be looking at more than numbers.

Taking Transportation to the People

In 2004, a commission, led by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, was formed to address this question: what is our transportation vision for next 25 years? Over the last two years, the commission has looked at the many obvious and not so obvious ways transportation planning effects the state. This week, they will release their report and begin the process of asking for public imput. We'll talk about their work, their recommendations, and ask what you think they got right and what they missed. Laura is joined Lew Feldstein, President of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and Carol Murray, Commissioner at the NH Department of Transportation.

One Last Look at Widening Interstate 93

The final environmental impact statement for widening interstate 93 is finished. That means in a little over 30 days, the Federal Highway Administration is expected to provide the final thumbs up or thumbs down on a project that's been in the planning stages for a dozen years. Before the FHA rules, however, interested parties have what may be their last chance to comment. As New Hampshire Public Radio's Doug MacPherson reports, many of the state's environmental groups continue to voice strong objections.

Fighting Over Frivolous Lawsuits

House lawmakers are scheduled to vote tomorrow on a measure that would modify New Hampshire’s frivolous lawsuit statute. Under the bill, people who sue over state construction projects could be forced to pay up to ten percent of a projects’ total cost if the courts find the suit “frivolous.” Proponents say the measure will protect taxpayers from so-called sabotage lawsuits. But Critics say the bill’s will to intimidate citizens from raising legitimate objections to poorly planned state projects.
