State Takes Land

Thanks to an Executive Council decision yesterday, New Hampshire is the new owner of about 150 acres of contaminated Androscoggin riverbed near the North Country paper mill complex. And many state officials say that ownership of dirty land means good things for the Granite State. NHPR?s Dan Gorenstein reports.

Cautious Optimism in Berlin

The economic situation in Berlin suddenly looks brighter. Multiple bidders have emerged for the city's paper mill complex, which has been closed since August. City officials are enthusiastic about the lead contender, Fraser Papers. NHPR's Trish Anderton spoke with diners at the Northland Dairy Bar and Restaurant yesterday to gauge the mood in the city, and to ask whether a revitalized mill complex will solve Berlin's economic woes.

Berlin Mayor Thanks NH for all the Help

Berlin Mayor Bob Danderson was in Concord yesterday to thank New Hampshire for all the help the state has given his town. After the city was hit by the closure of its main employer Pulp And Paper Of America, unemployment in Berlin has skyrocketed.

Yesterday, the people of Berlin received a major gift and Mayor Danderson joined us in the studio to tell us about it.

New York Mill Comes Knocking

On Sunday, newspapers throughout the northeast began running an advertisement campaign from a paper mill in upstate New York. The mill is offering permanent replacement positions in all areas of employment. The openings are the result of strike that dates back to June 16. NHPR's Dan Gorenstein has more.

Mills Close for Good

The owners of a mill complex in Berlin and Gorham have announced the mills are shutting down for good. Employees who had been on a temporary layoff since late summer are now being laid off permanently. Berlin Mayor Bob Danderson says the mill?s parent company is due to present a reorganization plan to a bankruptcy court on October 26th. Many Berlin residents hope the mills will eventually be sold. Danderson told NHPR?s Trish Anderton the permanent layoffs may help some millworkers get more assistance from the federal government.

Berlin Tightens its Belt

City leaders in Berlin are reacting to yesterday?s announcement that American Tissue, the company that owns a key paper mill complex in the area, has declared bankruptcy. The Berlin City Council met last night to discuss the eight-percent, across the board cuts it had already planned to the city budget. NHPR reporter Josh Rogers was there. He spoke earlier this morning with NHPR?s Trish Anderton.

Mills' Parent Company Goes Bust

North Country officials are reacting to news today that the parent company of two mills in Berlin and Gorham has declared bankruptcy. American tissue filed for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy in Delaware. The two mills have stood idle for nearly a month, and the company owes several million dollars in back taxes. NHPR?s Trish Anderton spoke with Berlin Mayor Bob Danderson.

Paper Mills in Berlin and Gorham Still Shut Down
