Story Archives of 'Cars'Auto Dealers Push for a Big 3 Bailout to Save New Hampshire JobsBy David Darman on Tuesday, November 25, 2008.The problems facing the nation’s Big Three Automobile manufacturers may seem far away in Detroit. The economic problems of Ford, GM and Chrysler could ripple across the country. A shutdown of the automakers could also close dealerships and jeopardize jobs with companies in the state that supply the auto industry. NHPR’s David Darman has more. Flying Cars and Talking MachinesBy Kelly Horan on Tuesday, November 18, 2008.
If and when the day comes that we’re zooming around in them, it’ll mean we’re finally living in the future that pop culture has promised us for decades. A world of tomorrow, where robot butlers wash our dishes, nutrient pills replace meals, and appliances have their say. Well, the future may be closer than we think. We have Roomba, afterall, the robot vacuum cleaner. And vitamin pills pack an ever-increasing punch. And as for those talking appliances, well, in Japan, some wish they’d kindly shut up. That’s where reporter Ross Chambless produced this story about household appliances and other machines talking automatically. Most experts agree that driving in a relatively fuel efficient car usually generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions per capita than flying -- and it only gets better when you carpool. His death, of natural causes at a relatively ripe old age was surprising - Knievel kept the nation on the edge of its seat in the 1960s and 70s with death-defying feats. He jumped his bike over rows of cars and trucks, dangerous animals, and enormous canyons on prime time TV specials.
Today daredevils are a fading breed. Those who are left scrape by with barely enough money to fill their tanks. These diminished showmen are the subject of a new documentary by New Hampshire filmmakers Peter Koziell and Darren Garnick. It’s called Hell Drivers: America’s Original Crash Test Dummies, and it’s showing in Concord this weekend as part of the Somewhat North of Boston film festival. Darren Garnick joins us in the studio. We also turn to Amy Diaz, film reviewer for The Hippo, New Hampshire’s alt-weekly newspaper, for a preview of what else will screen at the festival. After years of producing gas guzzlers, America's auto-makers weren't ready for the latest fuel crisis. Then the credit crisis hit. And more than 700 miles away from the Motor City, Granite State dealerships are also feeling one of the worst slowdowns in decades. NHPR Correspondent Sheryl Rich-Kern visited some auto-related businesses and files this report.
