Simulator Could Help Protect Troops, Teen Drivers

By Chris Jensen on Friday, November 6, 2009.

While most of the casualties we hear about from Iraq and Afghanistan involve roadside bombs and military action, not all of them are the result of combat operations. Since the US invasions of those two countries, hundreds of troops have died or been seriously injured in traffic accidents.

Car crashes are a problem at home, too. Last year about 4,000 teens were killed.

But a North Country firm and a military research center are trying to do something about both problems.

Driving While Blind

By Virginia Prescott on Wednesday, July 29, 2009.

Legally blind people have achieved autonomy in many aspects of their lives, but rarely have true independence when it comes to getting from point A to point B. They can walk, take public transport or depend on friends and family for transportation.

The National Federation of the Blind is working to change that. The Federation’s Jernigan Institute is partnering with Virginia Tech to take a giant first step in creating a vehicle that the vision impaired can drive. Together they built an open-air buggy, outfitted with laser range finders, a voice command interface, and a vibrating vest to let drivers know when to turn, slow down and break.

Wes Majerus was one of the first blind people to test drive the car earlier this month. Wes is an acess technology specialist with the National Federation of the Blind’s Jernigan Institute, and he joined us on the line from Baltimore to tell us more.

Cash For Clunkers Seems to be Working in New Hampshire

By Mark Bevis on Tuesday, July 28, 2009.

The CARS program is up and running.

The 1 billion dollar federal rebate program officially got into gear last week.

It offers car buyers up to 45 hundred dollars when they trade in an older car for a new one that gets better gas mileage.

And as NHPR's Mark Bevis reports, the program seems to be getting a good response in New Hampshire.

Here's What's Awesome: Kid-Launching, Timesharing Sports Cars

By Brady Carlson on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

It's an all-Father's Day edition of Here's What's Awesome! This week's awesome links are all about dad stuff - sadly I was unable to find a robot that fixes your power tools. Maybe next year.

Three-two-one magic
Usually when dads (and moms) count to three, it's because Junior is doing something he or she shouldn't be doing. Not here - this dad (a spitting image of Iron and Wine's Sam Beam) has rigged up a kid-launching super slip 'n' slide for his little ones. So when they hear Pops counting, they expect fun instead of punishment.
