Socrates Exchange

Socrates Exchange Be part of the Socrates Exchange on NHPR!

The Socrates Exchange is more than just a one hour live show on The Exchange. It's a monthly statewide discussion on issues, ethics and ideas. We pick a particular question each month, and begin to talk about these questions online before our show even begins. Then listen or call into our live show and continue the conversation once the show has ended. Post your comments on our webpage and then respond to others' ideas - keep the conversation going!

Join Exchange host Laura Knoy each month for a new discussion on The Socrates Exchange!

Future Discussions

November: Has technology helped or hurt us?
Since the beginning of time, human beings have been making tools to make life easier, better, faster or more efficient, but is that always a good thing? Are human beings happier today, whether individually or collectively, because of telephones, washing machines, text-messaging cell-phones, and iPods? Are there limitations on how much technology we should produce, or allow in our lives?

February – Should animals have rights?

April – Are there ethical limits to biotechnology/cloning/genetic engineering?

December/January – Is there one true religion?
Each of us within a particular religion think our religious beliefs are true, and that our practices are right, but how do we make sense of our neighbor, who thinks the same about her religion? Can all religions be true, even though they often contradict one another?  Can they all be false? How can we make sense of religion in a pluralistic society, especially when it plays out in issues like the displaying of nativity scenes in public places or the advertising of atheism on buses?

March – Is censorship ever acceptable?

May/June – Is ever right to do what is wrong?
