Companies Take Risks to Reduce Insurance Costs

Many New Hampshire businesses are facing another year of double digit increases in their health insurance costs. In response, some companies are scaling back their coverage, and others are asking employees to pay a larger share of the bill. But other employers are trying a very different approach. They want to cut out the big insurance carriers and provide health insurance all on their own. It's called self-insurance.

But as New Hampshire Public Radio's Dan Gorenstein reports, while self-funding can work for certain businesses, it also carries some serious risk.
