Homeless Teens: Difficult to Reach

By Jon Greenberg on Monday, October 28, 2002.

By most statistical measures, New Hampshire is a good place to be young. The state has the lowest rate of children living in poverty, the third lowest percentage of teens not in school or working, and the list goes on.

There are of course young people who don’t fit into this encouraging picture. There are teenagers who become disconnected from the familiar structures of family and school. Most move from one friends’ apartment to the next. Some live in their cars. There aren’t large numbers of people trying to work with these young adults and often, their offers of help are rejected.

On the edge of Manchester, by the bank of the Merrimack River, NHPR’s Jon Greenberg met a young couple living in a tent. He prepared this report.
