Hate Crimes

By Laura Knoy on Tuesday, November 6, 2001.

When someone commits a crime in New Hampshire, they can be sentenced more harshly if the act was motivated by racism or other discrimination. Opponents of this law say we should punish behavior, not the thoughts or feelings behind it. Laura's guests are Marcus Hurn, professor at Franklin Pierce Law Center www.fplc.edu and one of the authors of New Hampshire's hate crimes law, and Paul McMasters, first amendment ombudsman at the Freedom Forum in Arlington Virginia www.freedomforum.org.
