New Music: Deerhunter, Peter Bjorn and John

By Virginia Prescott on Monday, September 15, 2008.

Certain music feels like a soundtrack for certain times of the year. Summertime is the time to turn to the B52s or Rihanna records, and in the winter we settle in with the glacial sounds of Sigur Ros or Nick Drake.

Musicians know this, and they carefully choose the ideal release date for their albums. Which is why Bradford Cox is so upset. The man behind the bands Deerhunter and Atlas Sound found out that his new project was leaked online months before he wanted to make them public. He says the latest Deerhunter record, Microcastles was meant for autumn and winter. But fans were able to download it in August, after some cybersleuths found the album in a corner of the Internet and shared it with the world. It’s now available for download on iTunes, and the physical release is still slated for October.

Word of Mouth music reviewer Bill Slammon has heard the record, and he’s here to share his thoughts on it, along with the Swedish band Peter Bjorn and John's upcoming album of instrumentals, Seaside Rock. Bill is a clinical psychologist at the Winchester School in Winchester, NH. He hosts the new music show Saturday Morning on WVEW in Brattleboro, Vermont.
