Hybrid Car Mechanics

By Virginia Prescott on Monday, June 2, 2008.

Hybrid cars are still in the minority here in the United States. According to The Detroit News, they only made up 2.2 percent of total vehicle sales last year. But that number may grow quickly. A study by J.D. Power and Associates predicts it will jump to 7 percent by 2015.

If you’re one of the early adapters to find yourself behind the wheel of hybrid, you may find it difficult to find a good mechanic. The new technology means many aren’t trained to work on these cars, forcing the owners to take their green machines to the dealer for maintenance. But a new generation of progressive independent mechanics is forming, and there are a few training programs out there to help out. Producer Rebecca Williams tracked some of them down for Michigan Radio's The Environment Report.
