The Legacy of Jonathan Daniels

By Liz Bulkley on Wednesday, May 2, 2007.

In 1965, New Hampshire activist Jonathan Daniels was killed working for civil rights in Alabama. The young seminarian was friends with civil rights leaders Stokely Carmichael and is considered a martyr in the Episcopal church. The new play Six Nights in the Black Belt raises questions about the legacy of Jonathan Daniels. We're going to talk with playwright Lowell Williams and director Jamie Phillips about reinvisioning Daniels for the stage and the questions it raises about Jonathan Daniels' lasting influence. The work was commissioned by Yellow Taxi Productions in Nashua. We'll also talk with filmmaker Larry Benaquist about the extensive interviews he did in 1992 with Stokely Carmichael for his documentary about Jonathan Daniels titled Here Am I, Send Me.
