It's been forty years since the ragtag group of kids from the Peanuts comic strip first took voice in a television Christmas special that followed Charlie Brown on his quest to find the true meaning of Christmas. We'll look at the "A Charlie Brown Christmas" special, why it was so groundbreaking and controversial for its time and why it still endures today as a family holiday tradition. Laura's guests are Robert Thompson, Director of the Center for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University, Professor of Television and Popular Culture at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and author or editor of several books on television, and Derrick Bang, Peanuts Aficionado, Author of "50 Years of Happiness: A Tribute to Charles M. Schulz" and "Charles M. Schulz: Li'l Beginnings", Guest Curator at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in California and Entertainment Editor for the Davis Enterprise newspaper.
