Veteran Nashua Telegraph Editor Fired After Dispute With Publisher Over Working Conditions

The top editor in the newsroom at the Nashua Telegraph has been fired.

Wednesday was the first day Executive Editor Sandy Bucknam wasn’t an employee at the Telegraph in more than 39 years.

But Bucknam says he’s relieved to not be working in an atmosphere he and many other employees have described as “toxic and poisonous.”

Bucknam says things changed at the paper after Ogden Newspapers Inc. took over in 2013. He says the new owners were only concerned with cutting costs.

“Ogden has a misguided concept that a couple of people can put out five weeklies and three dailies in about two and a half days and it’s just a risky way of producing pages," Bucknam said. "What if someone gets sick? Who fills in?”

Bucknam says he was let go after he refused to demand more work of salaried employees who were already working 60 plus hours a week to avoid overtime costs. The paper’s city editor gave his notice that same day.
