Unexpected Installations: N.H.'s Private Schools Have Public Art

Holly McCabe

For a small state, New Hampshire has a plethora of private schools, each with a rich academic and cultural heritage.  Although the schools are private, many have art galleries that are open to the public.  Student and faculty art shows are on regular offer, but there is also compelling and unique work from both national and international artists.

The Lyceum Gallery at the Derryfield School in Manchester is currently hosting Uncanny, artwork by Karen Jerzyk and Holly McCabe.  Jerzyk is a UNH grad and self-taught photographer who is known for her location work, often in abandoned or decrepit buildings.  This show features the culmination of her Color Room series, nine saturated and somewhat surreal images.  Holly McCabe, from Rhinebeck, New York, is a multi-media artist and educator.  In Uncanny, McCabe’s soft, sinewy sculptures hang like webs from the ceiling and walls.

The Putnam Gallery at the Dublin School is featuring the work of Jeri Eisenberg .  Eisenberg is a photographer who employs non-traditional and alternative photo-based techniques.  Her large, abstract color images of leaves, branches and the space in between are dream-like in their contrast of light and dark.

The Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy is hosting 2016, A State of Mind, the Boston Printmakers Members Exhibition.  The exhibit, which runs from November 1st through December 10th (closed the week of Thanksgiving), will include a Gallery Talk on Saturday, November 5th, at 10:00 a.m.

All of these galleries are free and open to the public.  Call ahead for hours of operation.
