New Hampshire Fish and Game officials say they had to rescue three hikers and a dog over the weekend. The hikers ran into trouble on Little Haystack Mountain in Grafton County. NHPR’s Chris Jensen has more.
(Jensen) A 29-year-old Manchester man used his cell phone late Saturday to call for help after it got dark before he could finish hiking down from Little Haystack Mountain.
And he lacked a flashlight.
Fish and Game lieutenant James Kneeland says says hikers who don’t bring the right suppliescontinuously pose a dilemma for the department.
(Kneeland) “It is becoming a huge problem specially this time of year. You are hesitant to leave them over night to fend for themselves. The weather may drop into the 30’s have snow or cold rain.”
(Jensen) On the way to help him, Fish and Game officer Bob Mancini encountered another man, a woman and their dog from Bedford who were also in trouble because they didn’t have gear including flashlights.
Kneeland says their dog – thought to weigh about 60 pounds – also needed help.
(Kneeland) “Bob ended up having to carry the dog out.”
