For some, it's a chance to show off an army of supporters and pay homage to a long-running New Hampshire political tradition. For others, it's a chance to formalize their run for the presidency — however far-fetched their candidacy may be.
But, for front-runners and long-shot presidential hopefuls alike, the road to the White House must include a stop through Secretary of State Bill Gardner's office this month. Anyone looking to be on the ballot for the upcoming New Hampshire primary has until Nov. 20 to pay a visit to the State House, turn over a $1,000 filing fee and attest to their membership in either the Democratic or Republican party.
This year's filing period comes with added significance, as New Hampshire celebrates the centennial of its presidential primary. Several pieces of primary history will remain on display as candidates pass through to file their papers.
It's been just over a week since the filing period opened, but Gardner and his staff have already greeted plenty of presidential visitors.
