Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen says U.S. air strikes against ISIS in Syria were a necessary step toward defeating the terrorist group.
Senator Shaheen acknowledged the quandary of working with a Syrian government that just a year ago was forced to hand over chemical weapons it allegedly used on its own people.
But in an interview Tuesday night with NHPR’s Laura Knoy at the UNH School of Law, Shaheen, a member of the foreign relations committee, said there were no other options.
“The immediate threat is from ISIS. We can’t get at their headquarters of operations unless we go into Syria and I think it’s important that we’re seeing Arab countries be part of that action.”
Shaheen spent much of the evening pushing back against attacks from her opponent, Republican Scott Brown.
She defended her voting record, which Brown describes as being in lock step with President Obama.
Shaheen listed a number of issues in which she’s disagreed with the president, including a proposed internet sales tax and another round of military base closures.
