Senate Passes 30-Day Residency Requirement For Voting

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

The New Hampshire Senate has once again passed a 30-day residency requirement for voting, a measure Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan is likely to veto.

Republican senators backing the bill say it will cut down on voter fraud and ensure people voting in New Hampshire actually live in the state. Democratic opponents, meanwhile, say it will disenfranchise voters.

The Republican-controlled Legislature sent a similar bill to Hassan's desk last year. Hassan, who is now running for U.S. Senate against Kelly Ayotte, vetoed the legislation. Secretary of State Bill Gardner backed last year's bill.

If passed, the legislation would mean someone who moves to New Hampshire in mid-October could not vote here in the November election. Opponents say such a law could prevent students from voting in the state's regular September primaries.
